Experiences shared
These accounts reflect a range of starting points and outcomes. Not every session suits every person — we include that honestly here.
Margaret R.
British expat, Chiang Mai
"I attended the Orientation Workshop feeling rather uncertain about the whole subject. What struck me was how the facilitator handled questions — none were dismissed, and the pace never felt as though we were being rushed toward the end of a fixed syllabus. I left with a much clearer sense of what to ask my pension adviser in the UK."

Thai resident, Chiang Mai
"The Records Sorting Toolkit was genuinely useful. I had a collection of documents related to various savings accounts and pension arrangements that I had never quite organised — the template system gave me a structure I could actually maintain. One session was enough to get things in order. The maintenance guide has been handy since."

Dutch resident, long-term Chiang Mai
"The Extended Literacy Course suited me well. I had the time and the inclination to go through the subject properly, and the module structure allowed me to do that. The group discussions were the most valuable part — hearing how other people in similar positions were thinking about it helped me notice gaps in my own understanding that I would not have identified alone."

Australian, Nimmanhaemin area
"Straightforward and well-organised. I came to the Orientation Workshop expecting something more general, and it was actually quite specific about the kinds of questions worth raising with superannuation trustees. I appreciated that the session did not try to be something it wasn't — it stuck to education, which is exactly what I needed at that point."

Nattaporn P.
Thai national, approaching retirement
"I had been putting off looking into this for years because the subject seemed complicated and a little overwhelming. The workshop made it feel manageable. I do not think it answered all my questions — but it gave me the vocabulary to ask better ones when I eventually met with an adviser. That was more useful than I expected."

David M.
Canadian, retired in Chiang Mai
"The Records Toolkit took about two and a half hours for the working session itself, which was sufficient. I came prepared with a folder of documents, and the template system gave a clear structure for sorting them into categories that will be useful later. The follow-up check-in by email was a nice touch — I had a question arise two weeks afterward and it was answered promptly."

In More Detail
Three participant journeys
These accounts describe what participants came with, what the session provided, and what changed for them as a result.
The situation
An expat nearing the end of employment
A British participant in her late fifties had accumulated pension entitlements across two different UK providers but had not reviewed them in several years. She was aware they existed but uncertain of their structure, value, or what she would need to do to access them on retiring in Thailand.
What the session offered
After attending the Orientation Workshop, she worked through the Records Sorting Toolkit. The template system helped her consolidate correspondence from both providers into a single, organised folder. The session also clarified what questions were worth raising with a financial adviser in the UK — particularly around cross-border considerations in general terms.
What followed
She reported feeling substantially better prepared when she eventually met with a professional adviser. The adviser commented that she had arrived with unusually well-organised documentation, which made the consultation more productive. The Latterly sessions had not resolved her questions — but they had helped her ask the right ones.
The situation
A Thai national seeking general literacy
A Thai participant in his early sixties had spent his career working for a series of different employers. He had some awareness of Social Security contributions and a private savings arrangement but had not formed a clear picture of how these different elements related to one another in practical terms.
What the session offered
He enrolled in the Extended Literacy Course, which moved through the foundational vocabulary of pension and savings structures before addressing how different types of arrangement are typically documented and accessed. The small group format meant he was able to raise specific questions about Thai Social Security in a general educational context.
What followed
By the midpoint of the course, he described feeling more confident about what his existing arrangements actually provided — and clearer about what they did not. He used the planning frameworks from the course to prepare a list of questions for a subsequent meeting with a pension specialist. The process of writing those questions, he said, was itself clarifying.
The situation
A couple attending together
A Dutch couple, long-term residents of Chiang Mai, attended the Orientation Workshop together. They had discussed retirement planning between themselves but found that neither partner had a clear understanding of the technical vocabulary involved. Conversations with advisers in the Netherlands had felt productive but difficult to follow.
What the session offered
The workshop provided a shared vocabulary and a set of structured questions to bring to their next adviser meeting. They appreciated the section on budgeting literacy in particular — it helped them frame their existing arrangements in terms that were easier to discuss between themselves and with their advisers.
What followed
One partner subsequently enrolled in the Extended Literacy Course; the other felt the Orientation Workshop had been sufficient for their current needs. Both described the session as a practical use of a half day, with the printed summary sheet continuing to serve as a useful reference point several months later.
